Posing outside the front entrance at the official opening is the Bishop of Durham (Dr Hensle Henson), who performed the opening ceremony, With him are the Mayor and Mayoress of South Shields (Councillor and Mrs E Hill), Colonel and Mrs Robert Chapman, Alderman and Mrs Chuter-Ede, Alderman and Mrs J Ranson, Councillor Mrs Peel and Mr VC Carter. It's worth noting that Alderman James Chuter-Ede was MP for South Shields at this time, and was later to become Home Secretary and then Leader of the House.
