BELL, Harold
These details may be those of the same Harold Bell who went to Westoe Secondary School, but there is no direct evidence other than a match in the military records on a relatively common or incomplete name. Harold Bell was born in Byker, to William John and Martha Cummins Bell. His father died when he was only about 5, and he lived with his mother, school teacher Martha Cummins Bell. It is not known when he attended Westoe Secondary School, but at the age of 16 he was a Bursar with the Board of Education. He joined the 4th Battalion (Hull) of the East Yorkshire Regiment, and was killed in action at the Somme on 13-Nov-1916, at the age of 22 Harold was buried at the Serre Road Cemetery No 2, half way between Amiens and Arras, in Pas-de-Calais. |
