DALZIEL, Charles Sutherland

Charles Sutherland Dalziel was born in May, 1897, to local surgeon, William Dalziel, and was one of four brothers Charles Sutherland himself, William, James and Stanley) who went to the High School and fought in the war. He joined the High School in 1909, and was still at the school studying for a Cambridge Open Scholarship when war broke out. He left in July, 1915, to go to the Durham Officers Training Corps at Armstrong College with a view to gaining a commission. His commission was awarded in September, 1915, with the 7th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry, with whom he went to the front in January, 1916. On 8-Jan-1917 he was fatally wounded by a splinter of shrapnel in his chest. He is buried at the Flatiron Copse Cemetery, near Albert, on the Somme, and there is a memorial to him on the family headstone in Felton, Northumberland. |
