KEATINGE, Eustace Gabriel Lawrence

Eustace Gabriel Lawrence Keatinge was born in Reigate, Surrey, to astronomer, Gabriel Keatinge and his Irish wife, Elizabeth. Eustace joined the High School in 1901, and left in 1906 when the family moved to Shrewsbury. It is not known what he did after school, but he joined an Officers Training Corps before the war, and was promoted from Cadet to probationary 2nd Lieutenant in August, 1914. In October he was with the 3rd Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers. His commission was confirmed on 28-Apr-1915, just 4 days after he had been wounded at Ypres. While attached to the 2nd Battalion, Durham Light Infantry, Eustace was killed in action on 13-Apr-1918, and is buried at the Polygon Wood Cemetery. just a few kilometres east of Ypres, Belgium. |
