George Edward Smith was the son of iron-founder, Edward, and his wife Pleasance Agnes Smith.

Born in 1894, he went to Stanhope Road School, before joining Westoe Secondary School in 1907, leaving 2 years later to be an iron founder.

He served with the 19th Battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers, and died of wounds sustained in action on 30-Mar-1916.

He is buried at the Sailly-sur-la-Lys Canadian Cemetery in Pas de Calais, France, just south east of Armentieres, near the Belgian border.
