At the age of 15, Bill Moffatt entered the Westoe Secondary School, and left
in 1905 to attend Armstrong College, Durham University, where he studied Physics
and Mathematics.
Armed with his BSc and Board of Education Certificate, he joined the staff of Barnes
School, South Shields. In 1911, he moved to Westoe Senior School, and then,
on 1st October, 1919, he joined Westoe Secondary School as Senior Physics Master.
He was made acting Second Master at the start of the school year in 1934, a post
which he kept only until the transfer to Harton in 1936, when he resumed his role
as Senior Physics Master.
He was nicknamed Fizzy Miff, although I cannot work out why.
Bill Moffatt stayed at the school until his retirement in 1945. He died in South Shields in 1953.
